SMILE, SMOLDER OR SMIRK: FINDING YOUR HEADSHOT STYLE

Actors often find themselves at a crossroads when it comes to headshots: choosing between commercial, theatrical or comedic. While they may seem similar, these headshots serve different purposes and express varied facets of an actor’s range.

Commercial Headshots:

  • Tailored for the advertising industry, aiming to present actors as relatable and trustworthy to sell a product.
  • Should display broad appeal, showing actors as likable and engaging, often with a smile.
  • Recommended attire includes bright, warm colors that stand out, like jewel tones, to create a friendly and energetic image.
  • Used mainly for lifestyle commercials, such as advertisements for consumer products or family-oriented services.
  • Example: A smiling family enjoying Disneyland, as seen in lifestyle brand ads.

Theatrical Headshots:

  • Intended for casting in plays, TV shows, and films, emphasizing layers of personality and emotional depth.
  • Expressions vary from confident and serious to subtle smirks or vulnerability, depending on the character types pursued.
  • Suggested wardrobe colors are muted, like earth tones or deep hues such as royal purple or navy, to focus on the actor’s expression.
  • Utilized for dramatic roles, where actors may be cast as the “girl next door,” a “young professional,” or the “villain.”
  • Example: A stern look for a character in a crime drama series.

Comedic Headshots:

  • Serve as a bridge between commercial and theatrical, suited for sitcoms and stand-up comedy.
  • Aim to showcase the actor’s comedic style, whether sarcastic or slapstick, without being over-the-top.
  • Wardrobe and expression should hint at the humor type while maintaining authenticity.

I am a commercial and lifestyle photographer known for making even the most reluctant subjects feel comfortable in front of my lens. When I’m not shooting in my sun-drenched studio on Oregon City’s historic Main Street, I’m on location helping my clients craft contemporary, on-brand images to help grow their own bottom line.

As the former owner of a PR & marketing firm, I helped Inc. 500-businesses communicate, reach and engage with professional and retail consumers. Today, I bring that expertise to my photography clients, where we translate brand messaging into the visual medium.

I laugh a lot. I work too much. And I love the fact that my job allows me to work with such a vast range of people and businesses. And because I sat on the other side of the desk for so many years, hiring photographers to provide what I now offer,  I am committed to making sure your project is completed on time. On budget. And with work that you’ll be proud to share with your audience.
